History

The first church to be constituted in this community was originally known as The Starkville Church. The church was known to be active as early as 1887 when the church became a member of the Salem Baptist Association and William Clinton Moseley was serving as the pastor. Several Families were active at the church during this time and they included the Wilkes, Raileys, Hamms, and Mcleods and Tyners. In 1888, the church had about 32 members. The land that The Starkville Church was on was donated by Jim Tyner and was located on a settlement road connecting the old Upper Helican and Lower Helican roads. The church building was torn down in April 1904 and moved on land donated by S.A. Pilley about one mile down the road from the previous location. The building was used as both a church and local school until 1908 when a school was erected by the state. The old church was razed and church services were held in the new school for a time. During the time that the church met in the school, Tom Floyd and Walter D. Vickery were ordained. In the early 1900's the Floyd's, Graves, Rushings, Taylors, and Spiveys were active in The Starkville Church.
